Tilden Hotel Penthouse

Built atop the roof of the 8-story Tilden Hotel in downtown San Francisco, the penthouse utilizes light gauge steel framing in order to minimize the structural impact of the building on the existing concrete roof. The lateral system consists of light gage flat strap bracing with holdowns that are anchored through the roof to existing concrete beams and new steel beams below. Retrofitting of various existing concrete beams that support new bearing and lateral braced walls was required, and careful consideration of the constructability of all new steel retrofitting elements beneath the existing roof was required due to limited accessibility to these areas for their installation.
