OUR FIRM

OUR HISTORY

Hom-Pisano Engineering, Inc. was founded in San Francisco in 2008 by Michael Hom and Jason Pisano. The firm was incorporated in the State of California on August 15, 2008.

WHY CHOOSE US

We hold each and every project to the same high standard of care and quality of service no matter the size or scope. We believe that the involvement of the engineer through all phases, from schematic design through construction, is critical to the successful and economical completion of each project.

Our scope of structural engineering and consulting services covers a wide range of project types including but not limited to:

  • New single- and multi-family residential buildings
  • New commercial buildings
  • New civic/municipal facilities
  • Residential remodels & additions
  • Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
  • Seismic upgrades
  • Soft-story retrofit design
  • Deck and roof terrace design
  • Restaurant renovations/Tenant Improvements
  • Equipment anchorage
  • Foundation replacement
  • Site retaining wall design
  • Art & science exhibits
  • Specialty/non-building structures

An Eye Toward Sustainability

Buildings account for almost 40% of total energy consumption and 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Additionally, building construction, renovation, use and demolition together constitute about two-thirds of all non-industrial solid waste generation in the U.S. (www.epa.gov). We find these numbers to be staggeringly high and believe that we as design professionals have a distinct responsibility to ourselves, our clients and the environment to approach structural design with sensitivity towards resource consumption and environmental impact.

We stress the importance of getting involved early in the design process to address structural implications of proposed green architectural features as well as discuss aspects of the project where sustainable structural features can be implemented. Examples of sustainable structural features that we have used in our projects include high fly ash concrete, structural steel (which is inherently the most recycled material used in building construction), engineered wood products, and all-bolted structural connections to facilitate deconstruction, among others.

OUR TEAM

Michael A. Hom, P.E. Founding Principal

Mike has over twenty years of professional experience particularly in the design, permitting and construction management of residential buildings.  He specializes in the design of vertical and horizontal additions, full seismic upgrades, and interior remodeling projects.  He pays special attention to constructability in the design phase and is distinctly attentive and responsive during construction.  Mike is a native San Franciscan and lives in the Sunset with his wife and three children.

Matthew S. Coelho, P.E., LEED® AP Senior Associate

Matt has over nineteen years of professional experience in the design and analysis of both new and existing buildings. He is particularly proficient in the field and is often our representative for on-site consultations and structural observations. Matt was born and raised in New Jersey and enjoys climbing, yoga and sailing. When not at one of the locations for Woods Beer and Wine Co., a brewery and winery he co-founded in San Francisco, he can be found at sea on his boat Coconut.

Carlos M. Machado Project Engineer

Prior to joining HPE, Carlos was involved in an assortment of projects all across the country totaling over $1 billion in construction costs and varying in scope, square footage, materials, usage, owner requirements, and funding sources.  Carlos specializes in constructability, fostering a collaborative “design-build” workflow in his projects by incorporating “means and methods” considerations into the design phase.  His portfolio includes new construction as well as seismic retrofits, remodel projects, “High-Definition BIM” modeling (3D and 4D) and construction-level detailing of various materials (concrete reinforcement, structural steel, cold-formed steel, and wood).  He’s had the pleasure to work on projects for Disney, Tesla, Apple, Yale University, Veterans Affairs, among others.

In addition to structural engineering, Carlos is passionate about S.T.E.A.M. education and is regularly found in the classroom inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.  When he’s not traveling to World Cups or visiting family in Portugal, you can also find Carlos volunteering in our local Portuguese community.
