Station 1300 Archway

Menlo Park, CA

Description

HPE provided structural analysis and detailing for the three-dimensional steel truss arch that frames the entry to the main plaza of a new mixed-use development in Menlo Park, CA. The archway is constructed from waterjet-cut steel plates that are welded together to create the box trusses.

A three-dimensional computer model of the archway was created in order to analyze the load effects from both wind and seismic in all directions. Because of its size, the arch was fabricated in three separate sections that were assembled on-site. As such, load transfer across the splice locations was carefully considered as part of the analysis. The arch is supported on concrete pedestals at the interior supports and steel tube braced frames at each end.
